Local Name: Mithun

Scientific Name: Bos frontalis

Mithun is also the State of Arunachal Pradesh, another Indian state in the North East.

State Bird of Nagaland : Blyth’s tragopan

Common Name: Grey-bellied Tragopan

Scientific Name: Tragopan blythii

Blyth’s tragopan is a resident bird found in the Indian States of Nagaland, Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur. Blyth’s tragopan is listed as “Vulnerable” in the IUCN Red List. It is also listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Scientific Name: Rhododendron arboreum

Local name: Lal Buransh (Hindi), Dieng-tiw-saw (Khasi), Nithu (Angami), Lindai (Mao).

State Tree of Nagaland : Alder (Alnus nepalensis)

State Tree of Nagaland : Alder

Scientific Name: Alnus nepalensis

Common Name: Alder Tree, Nepal Alder, Himalayan Alder

It is a fast-growing large deciduous tree with smooth, grey, or dark-grey colored bark. The root nodules are also capable of fixing atmospheric Nitrogen and therefore this tree is planted after the fire in Jhum cultivation in Nagaland.

Chocolate Mahseer is also the State Fish of Sikkim, declared in 2021.
