16 January 2024:  Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra enters Kohima, Nagaland

  • In 2023, the Congress Party led by Rahul Gandhi embarked on the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra  from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
  • In 2024, Rahul Gandhi resumed Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra 2.0 from Thoubal in Manipur on 14 January 2024, and ended on 16 March 2024 in Mumbai.  The route covered 6700 km, 110 districts, 100 Lok Sabha seats, and 337 assembly constituencies.
  • The Day 3 of the 2.0 Yatra resumed from Kohima, Nagaland on 16th January 2024.

18-22 January 2024: Nagaland International Trade Expo 2024 organized Business Association of Nagas (BAN)  held in Dimapur

  • Nagaland International Trade Expo 2024 organised by the Business Association of Nagas (BAN) was held from January 18 to 22, 2024 at Senden Riju, Purana Bazar, near ISBT, Dimapur, including national and international exhibitors.
  • The expo was inaugurated by Narayan Rane, Union Minister for Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), Government of India.
  • The expo was organised in collaboration with the National SC-ST Hub, National Small Industries Corporation, Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of India and Government of Nagaland.
  • The aim of the expo was to provide local entrepreneurs with a platform to highlight and promote products and services of Naga entrepreneurs.

24-25 January 2024: 4th Rüsoma Orange Festival 2024

  • 4th edition of Rüsoma Orange Festival 2024 was held at Rüsoma village, Kohima, Nagaland for two days.
  • Participants awarded for the sweetest orange (Rüvuosielie Theünuo), the heaviest orange & best stall  (Vakhriezo Zhale ),  and the biggest quantity stall award (Vikuolie Keyiencu).
  • Registered visitors: 1800 visitors on the first day and almost 1600 visitors on second day.

26 January 2024: Naga woman activist Sano Vamuzo to be honoured with Padma Shri 2024

  • Smti. Sano Vamuzo, former chairperson of the Nagaland Women Commission and founding member of Naga Mothers’ Association has been selected for  Padma Shri 2024 for distinguished service in the field of Social Work.
  • The widow of former Nagaland chief minister Vamüzo Phesao.
  • She completed Intermediate Arts (I.A.) in 1961 and B.A. in 1963 from Guwahati University, B.Ed. from Bombay University in 1965, and M.A. (Education) from NorthEastern Hill University (NEHU) in 1980.

31 January 2024: Retired DGP T.John Longkumer appointed as State Election Commissioner (SEC) Nagaland

Government of Nagaland appointed retired DGP T.John Longkumer as State Election Commissioner (SEC) for a period of 5 years or till he attains the age of 65 years or until further orders.

01 March 2024: India suspends Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar – Nagaland Legislative Assembly adopts resolution on FMR

  • On 8th February 2024, Union Home Minister, Shri. Amit Shah announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have recommended to scrap Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar to ensure the internal security of the country and maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States bordering Myanmar.
  • The 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly passed a resolution at the Assembly Secretariat, Kohima on 1st March 2024 to request the Government of India to reconsider its decision of scrapping the FMR with Myanmar – and to work out regulations for movement of people across the borders in close consultation with the people inhabiting the border areas.
  • The house passed the resolution considering the decision of the Centre will cause immense hardship and inconvenience, to the Naga people living in the Indo-Myanmar border areas; and due to the fact that the traditional land holding system straddles across the international border in many areas.

03 March 2024: Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) announces Dr. Chumben Murry as the consensus candidate for Nagaland’s Lok Sabha seat

  • Dr. Chumben Murry is a Member of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the 38 Wokha Assembly Constituency and he is also Advisor for Law and Justice.
  • Dr. Chumben Murry did not contest in the Nagaland Assembly Election in 2023. He serves as Advisor to Chief Minister of Nagaland.

05 March 2024: ENPO declared ‘Public Emergency’  for Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) demand

  • ENPO declared ‘Public Emergency’ on March 5, informing of a phase-wise agitation to follow in protest against the delay of the Government of India in settling the offer of a proposed Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT).
  • Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) represents the Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Phom, Sangtam, Tikhir, and Yimkhiung communities. The ENPO have been demanding for a separate state ‘Frontier Nagaland’ since 2010.

08 March 2024: Three women awarded the Nagaland State Commission for Women Award 2024 during the International Women’s Day

  • C. Tsurila, Nengneithe Hengna and K Ela were conferred the NSCW Award for their wide spectrum of contributions in Naga society ranging from entrepreneurship to safeguarding the rights of vulnerable women and children, from uplifting street vendors to promoting Naga arts.
  • C. Tsurila is from Muleangkiur village, Shamator district. She is a home-based entrepreneur and also serving as the Field In-charge, Shamator and Tuensang Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and also as Finance Secretary of the Yimkhiung Women Organization.
  • Nengneithe Hengna is the founder of Runway HM Private Limited. She is an entrepreneur driven by  passion for handmade art and a deep appreciation for her family’s heirloom and accessories. She established Runway Nagaland in 2011, initially as a platform for local artisans. However, her love for the artistry led her to create her own Made in Nagaland Jewellery brand.
  • K. Ela is the Director of Prodigals’ Home. She is a Social Worker for almost two decades. She heads the organisation which engages with vulnerable women and children, education and empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwD), rehabilitation of persons with substance/drug use disorder (men and women).

 

12 March 2024: Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) directs Legislators to report to Tuensang HQ over Frontier Nagaland Territory issue.

  • On March 12, 2024, Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) and its federating units issued directives to the Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and 20 Elected Members from the region to report to Tuensang HQ within 36 hours.
  • This was subsequent to the Eastern Nagaland Legislators’ Union (ENLU) meeting minutes on February 28 which surfaced in the public domain, according to which the ENLU decided  to participate in the Lok Sabha elections against the stance of the ENPO not to participate in any State or Central elections.
