Newspaper is a publication printed periodically. Newspapers play an important role in a democracy. It not only keeps them informed of various current events, but also enables citizens to exercise their freedom of expression in sharing their thoughts and voicing concerns. It can also be seen as a bridge between the government and the citizens on various aspects of governance and its polices.
“Ao Milen” is considered to be the first and oldest published newspaper from Nagaland. This makes ‘Ao Milen’ the first vernacular newspaper published in Nagaland. It was started by Ao Students Conference (AKM) in 1933 as “The Naga Messenger”. It was renamed “Ao Milen” in 1937. Nagaland Post is the most widely circulated daily English newspaper in Nagaland.

- Ao Milan is the oldest newspaper published from Nagaland, and thus, the first vernacular newspaper from Nagaland.
- Ao Milen is the third oldest newspaper published in the North East
- Ao milen is an outcome of the general conference of Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) in 1931 at Waromung village where a resolution was adopted to publish a newspaper and was named ‘The Naga Messenger’.
- In 1937, the paper was renamed ‘Ao Milen’.
- It was only from September 2006 that Ao Milen started publication daily.
- Late. Sosangmeren is the better known editor of Ao Milen.
