Name: Intanki National Park

  • Location: Peren district, Nagaland, India

Dominant flora: Mahogany, Palms, Rattan, Bamboo, Pinus Khasyia, Pinus Caribiae, Rubia cordifolia, Passiflora edulis, Oroxylum indicum, Elaeocarpus ganitrus, Dipterocarpous macrocarpous, Shorea assamica, Mesua ferra, Panax gensing, Aquilaria agallocha, Pleoni, Phauis, Cymbidium tigrinum etc.

Dominant fauna: Mammals – Tiger, Elephant, Wild Dog, Mithun, Hoolock Gibbon, Goral, Barking Deer, Kallej, Sloth Bear, Flying Squirrel, Buffaloes, Sloth bears, Palm civets, Leopards, Pangolins, Porcupine, Sambar, Elephants etc.

Birds: White breasted kingfishers, Hornbills, Pheasants, Kaleej, Black stork etc.

Brief History / Legal Status of Intanki National Park, Peren, Nagaland

  • The then Deputy Commissioner of Naga Hills, J.H. Hutton proposed creation of a reserve forest at Intanki- Dhansiri Valley in 1920 and sought for land.
  • Formation of Intanki Reserved Forest with an approximate area of 44,800 acres was notified vide No.1186R Dated 7 May 1923, to be effective from 15 June 1923.
  • Notification No.2005R Dated 18 July 1927, the Governor in council further attached another 5,120 acres of forest land to be added to the Intanki Reserved Forest w.e.f. 15 August 1927.
  • Government of Nagaland through a Notification No.FOR-158/74 Dated Kohima, 22 April 1975 declared the Intanki Reserved Forest comprising an area of 20,202 hectares as wild life sanctuary.
  • Government of Nagaland through another Notification No.FOR-43/83 Dated 3 March 1993 declared Intanki Wildlife Sanctuary as Intanki National Park.

    • Singphan Elephant Reserve is the 30th Elephant Reserve in India

Project Elephant (PE) was launched by the Ministry of Environment and Forests , Government of India in the year 1992 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) with following objectives:

  • To protect elephants, their habitat & corridors
  • To address issues of man-animal conflict
  • Welfare of captive elephants
